Beautiful Architecture

Amazon is joining the party of novelty headquarters
by designing its new Seattle office in the form of a huge,
spherical greenhouse. Formed of three interconnected
glass bubbles, rising up to 30m tall, the complex will
reside amongst grassy mounds in downtown Seattle.

This little spherical utopia is conceived as the social heart
of a vast Amazonworld, covering over three city blocks.
I’ve decided to take on the task of photographing the
construction of this amazing project and create a building
timeline to not only share the ever-changing city skyline but
the effect it will have on the surrounding neighborhood.
Although these first images are random, as I go along the
timeline I hope to capture some from different perspectives.

Let the fun begin.

The annual American Institute of Architects’ (AIA)
Institute Honor Awards program announced
that King Street Station in Seattle, WA
has been selected from a total of 500 national
submissions.  The project is one of the recipients
selected by the AIA for excellency in architecture.
Congratulations to ZGFRead more about it here.

Beautiful School

Atelier 208 designed Pajot’s School canteen, located
in the town of Pontault-Combault, France.  The
design of the building is the expression of its structure
and function. From a steel and concrete frame, the
envelope speaks through a child’s language and plays a
major role in the way children perceive the space.
The origami like roof folds and unfolds in order to
allow light to emphasizing imagination, creativity
and a certain ingenuity.

Beautiful Rainbow Spectrum

A beautiful bright spectrum of colors to bask in whilst walking through
a cathedral of rainbows. To Breathe – A Mirror Woman is Kimsooja’s
site-specific installation for the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid, Spain.

To expand and unite the architectural structure of the space, Kimsooja
had the whole floor tiled in mirrors. She then covers the vault and the
entire glass surface of the palace with a translucent diffraction film.
When outside light filters through the glass and reflects off the film,
it creates a rainbow spectrum that is mirrored in every part of the atrium.

Beautiful Historic Architecture

Trolling around Queen Anne Hill this week
inspires me to share an example of beautiful reuse.
Old Queen Anne High School, designed by James Stephen
in 1899, is a Neo-classical building that sits high atop
Queen Anne Hill in Seattle. Originally noted for its
spacious corridors, ample exits, and abundant light
and fresh air it was considered “modern” when it
was constructed. Today is houses, in all its
Neo-classical glory, high-end condominiums.
An excellent example of the adaptive reuse of
historic buildings.

Beautiful Hollywood Cabin

Mad Men‘s Vincent Kartheiser used to live in
a small one-room bungalow on a nondescript
Hollywood street”. But he had big plans for the little
580 SF house. Evoking a Japanese industrial feel,
it has a beautiful giant boulder sink. Local studio
Funn Roberts designed the space with a suspended
bed that drops from ceiling and a headboard made of
a huge slab of redwood fastened to the wall on hinges
so that, when the bed is raised, the piece of wood can
flip down to double as a desk.  Love the cleverly
designed bed; it works on a pulley-system
with a 300-pound counterweight hidden in the closet.
