Beautiful Yellow
Symbolism of the Color Yellow
The word yellow comes from the Old English geolu. Yellow is associated with sunshine,
knowledge, and the flourishing of living creatures, but also with autumn and maturity.
The yellow sun was one of humanity’s most important symbols and was worshiped as
God in many cultures. According to Greek mythology, the sun-god Helios wore a
yellow robe and rode in a golden chariot drawn by four fiery horses across the
heavenly firmament. The radiant yellow light of the sun personified divine wisdom.
Short History of Yellow Pigments
The oldest yellow pigment is yellow ochre, which was amongst the first pigments
used by humans. Egyptians and the ancient world made wide use of the mineral
orpiment for a more brilliant yellow than yellow ochre. In the Middle Ages,
Europeans manufactured lead tin yellow. They later imported Indian yellow and
rediscovered the method for the production of Naples yellow, which was used by
the Egyptians. Modern chemistry led to the creation of many other yellows,
including chrome yellow, cadmium yellow, lemon yellow, and cobalt yellow.
Beautiful Apartment Tour
Retired geography professor and avid world traveler
Bill Shumaker has amassed an eclectic collection of
art and artifacts from every corner of the globe.
Shumaker, who lives on the bottom two floors
of a 19th-century brownstone he purchased in
the early 1970s, has adorned his 2,400 sq. ft.
space with mementos that remind him of
international journeys and friends.
Everything in the house has a personal
connection. I love the car door idea.

The bathroom is full of car door pictures, a collection
that started when a visiting friend found a mustang door
on his stoop and decided to sketch it. From then on it
was required that Bill’s house guests sketch, paint, sculpt,
photograph etc the door, which itself hangs in the bathroom.

Beautiful Photography + Art
This is stunningly beautiful Ball of Light.
A beautiful inspiring story; Denis Smith.
Implementing the photographic technique of light painting,
which uses a long camera exposure to capture moving light,
Smith creates luminous, life-size geometry. At night, and
typically when it is a full moon for the ideal effect,
Smith takes to the outdoors scouting locations with
dramatic landscapes and abandoned urban spaces.
The spheres are materialized by a constant swinging
and turning motion, which, when photographed,
become stationary glowing forms. The ephemeral
movements become lasting imagery embedded into
the camera. Smith drew much of his influence for the
project from the actual spherical shape, a significant
form throughout nature present in the sun
and planets which harness strength and power.
Beautiful Recycle+Reuse
Strolling through Pioneer Square I ran into this
wonderful random sculpture from a previous
art walk made entirely of old recycled drawers
and various pieces of wood. Very creative.
