One of the plights of urban neighborhoods is change
which means some businesses survive and some die.
Especially when it comes to old cafes. The scruffier
version of the B&O is MIA on Capitol Hill and before
that was the Still Life Cafe in Fremont. Many moons
ago it was my favorite haunt along with the B&O but
alas it no longer exists. But I did capture this
wonderful mural as a tribute and it’s nice to know
I wasn’t the only one missing it. It reflected the older.
grungier, friendlier, and cheaper side of Fremont.

Beautiful Sculpture
More images from the Fremont Fair.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
HAPPY SUMMER SOLSTICE, may all days
be sunny, happy, and long…
And of course the famous (or perhaps infamous) Fremont Troll….
Beautiful Mural
I spent the weekend perusing the Fremont Fair+Parade.
For those of you who don’t know about it you will
by the time I finish todays posts. I’ll start at the
beginning. I like to park a fair distance away
from my destination because
a) I get to see all the wonderful micro sights
I would miss if I didn’t and
b) I love to walk.
First up is the wonderful wall mural along a concrete wall
walking down to the fair. It’s a cartoonish play off the
Fremont Neighborhood cafes and icons.
Fremont, otherwise known as The Center of the Universe,
is an awesome place to hang out on any day.

Not anywhere near Kansas…and dogs rule.

Mural is a block long and run under an overpass.
Colorful version of “Waiting for the Interurban”
Across the street is a wonderful series of painted posts
creating a colorful rhythm.

Beautiful Vintage Restaurant
Tonight is dedicated to Hatties Hat. It’s mid-century charm is
like stepping into a time machine sitting humbly among the
numerous overpriced trendy restaurants in Ballard.
Classic American comfort food at its best.

Hatties Hat, circa 1904, located in Ballard, Seattle, WA
Beautiful Sculpture
As mentioned in a previous post, Cascade Neighborhood also
has some celebrated new additions along with some gems.
Sandwiched between the sleek new Amazon.com buildings
and the Cascade Park is a new building with some wonderful
sculptures reminiscent of logs. I don’t know the official
name of the sculptures but I like to call them the
Rainbow Logs.

Beautiful Mid-Century Architecture
Back to my documentation of the disappearing act of beautiful
authentic Cascade Neighborhood as Amazon.com moves in.
Today I highlight the mid-century building across the street
from the Cascade Park and P-Patch. It’s the old
Central Supply Center for Seattle School District built in 1955.
I love the rhythm of the roof pattern, classic 1950s architecture.
I discovered this great website about South Lake Union
which is where changes are occurring almost daily.
Beautiful Lighting
Not only does the Macrina Bakery have the coolest door handle
and wall covering it also has a beautiful one-of-a-kind
handmade light fixture. Love this bakery.
Beautiful Wall
This is the coolest bathroom wall ever. Completely covered
with pine wood laid on end at varying lengths so that it appears
as though it’s jutting out of the wall. Awesome 3D application.
Beautiful, creative use of left pieces of wood. If you are in Seattle
check it out at the Macrina Bakery in SODO on First Avenue.
Beautiful Shop
Tiffany Co. concept store. The wood siding and glass doors
are warm, beautiful, and not as fussy as the old brand.
I like it even if I can’t afford the goods.

Tiffany Co., University Village, Seattle, WA
Beautiful Gallery
Today was one of those all too familiar drizzly days
when I just wanted to be anywhere else but Seattle.
The remedy? A field trip to the Henry Art Gallery where
I was treated to some James Turrell and a beautiful
photographic exhibit displaying some stunning images.
